Gloucester Airport is fully equipped with night lighting and available for Night rating training in the winter months, open until 7:30pm weekdays. Nearby airports also equipped include Kemble, Wellesbourne and Oxford. It’s not unknown for club members to fly out for dinner somewhere on a clear winter’s evening and making use of the rating.

During the course, you’ll be shown the additional pre-flight considerations, navigation and landing techniques involved.

You’ll need five hours of dual instruction but there is no skill test or theory exam. After some dual circuits, you’ll fly a one hour cross country landaway and make five solo take-offs and full stop landings.

It’s common to take this qualification prior to embarking on an IR(R) course.
